Conference Objective:
Meets Conference Objective #5: Identifies ways to prepare for and enjoy a fulfilling retirement.
Abstract:
Four specific travel/study opportunities are presented by the "experts", retirees who have chosen a particular travel/study experience. The options to be covered include discussion of the Eldherhostel Experience. Betty Combs will discuss this educational adventure for older adults who are looking for something different. She says the later years should be a time for new beginnings, opportunities, and challenges. The Elderhostel Experience offers a way of expanding your horizons with people who are interested in the same things you are.
Another option to be discussed is "Doing It On Your Own Travel Experience". Les Dreiman, Extension Retiree and his wife, Barbara, have traveled extensively since retiring. They have taken both planned and escorted tours through Europe and Great Britain. However, they expanded their "adventures" to include "on your own" travel via rail passes, traveling with back packs, renting a car and traveling through Ireland and more. They have traveled on their own on the EuroStar, the train that takes you through the channel to London, learned to use the London subway system, used the BritRail pass extensively, took one day excursions into the countryside and rode the rails to Scotland. Lee will tell you how to do it if this is appealing to you. Jim Preston, a member of the Ambassadair Travel Club and a member of Golden Globers (over 50's club), will discuss the advantages of going the club route for your travels. A membership in the Ambasssadair Travel Club is a cost efficient, direct flight passport to the world, with famous "at your service" handling of all the details, baggage, hassles, etc. that can get in the way of having a good time. Members can relax as they travel everywhere without a worry in the world!
Steve Cambridge, a coordinator and representative of global volunteers has participated in this international and cultural experience which can be a life changing experience. He says, "do not attend the session if you must stay in luxurious hotels, eat in 5 star restaurants, expect to be entertained and pampered, don't like to try new things and do not want to face or overcome challenges." On the other hand, "do attend if you want to contribute your skills to ongoing human and economic development projects around the world, are interested in becoming a servant leader, willing to work with and learn from people in a choice of 17 countries, teaching conversational English, assisting with building and repair projects, and seeing the world from a different set of eyes, and being open to having a life-changing experience!"
