Description:
One of the decisions to be made as we enter our retirement years is where we wish to spend our time in the future as far as living arrangements. This session will give participants a look at several options.

Objective:
Meets Conference Objective #5 - Identifies ways to prepare for and enjoy a fulfilling retirement.

Abstract:
Dr. Margaret Adamek, Director of Gerontology at IUPUI, Indianapolis, will set the stage for the presentation discussing the statistics and trends of the graying of America" as we enter the next century. She will discuss the living/housing options available to seniors and the pros and cons of each. Her presentation will be followed by presentations of four retired Extension staff who are living four of the different options available to seniors. They will discuss why they made the living arrangement choice that they did, giving the pros and cons for their choice. Timing of the decision will also be discussed.

The "Living the Options" presentations by our four retirees are as follows:

Stan Watts - No change in living arrangements from the time he retired 20+ years ago.

Alice Chitty - Now a resident of a full service Retirement Community in west Lafayette, Alice will discuss when she made the decision and why, as well as the pros and cons as she sees it.

Pat Roark - Pat chose to move close to one of her daughters. In the meantime, she had to make the decision to move her elderly mother to the community into a full service retirement community due to health problems.

Gus Thias - A significant number of retirees decide to have the best of two worlds by maintaining two homes. Gus will discuss their option of spending winters in a warm climate (Florida) and coming back to Indiana in the spring to enjoy the rest of the year at home with friends and family. Of course, there are pros and cons for this arrangement which Gus will discuss.
